This is Scout + Bean’s take on a traditional Bolga Basket. Perfect for toting to the open-air farmer’s markets, containing your most recent craft project, or harvesting all the herbs and veggies from your garden. Or let’s be realistic for a moment: you’ll probably use it for schleping around all those kid essentials - sunscreen, bug spray, water bottles, toy cars, every rock that they see (the list goes on, am I right?)
Each basket stands approximately nine inches tall and measures approximately fifteen to sixteen inches wide at it’s widest point. The alder wood handles, cut here on our farm in Lincolnville, Maine, are all about 8 inches long and one inch in diameter. Please keep in mind that every basket it going to be a little bit different than what is pictured - the handle, the way the dye/thread lines up, the exact bulb shape. These are all made freeform and by hand, making them nearly impossible to reproduce entirely, but I promise you that you are going to end up with a completely unique, quality piece that you will adore! On the bottom, we’ve secured a wooden, half-inch thick, circle that has been coated with marine grade polyurethane. This will help to keep the bottom of your basket clean when you inevitably set it down to pick out the perfect tomatoes.
A little back story about these baskets: When my Gram succumbed to cancer a few years ago, I knew I wanted to design a basket in her memory, but nothing seemed like quite the right thing. When I finished it, I was sure - this was Gram’s basket. I can picture all of her Red Heart acrylic yarn in here. My grandmother was an avid knitter. When we were children, each year she would have us trace our hands on a piece of scrap paper and ask us what color that years’ L.L. Bean parka would be so she could knit us matching mittens. I can even remember graduating from the baby mittens (with the attached string that went through your coat so you didn’t lose them) up to the loose, big-girl mittens. I was so proud that year. I’ve named this basket, “The Much Basket” in honor of my Gram - partially because it will hold so “much”, but also because of something my Gram used to say. Whenever we went out, Gram would always say, “Thank you much!” to waitresses, cashiers, or anyone that helped her. And it drove me CRAZY, because it wasn’t grammatically correct, but it’s what she always said. And whenever our visits or phone calls would come to an end, Gram would ALWAYS say, “Love you much!”. Every time. I miss that. And I miss her.
